Just as the title says... what video games to you remember putting a lot of time into as a child? When I say child, I mean pre-teen days.
As a kid my dad never let me have a console, and insisted I used a PC to game. I suppose by father goal was for me to become more computer literate.
For me, what stands out in my childhood gaming memories are:
1) Prince of Persia (1989) for DOS. I remember trying so hard to beat the game within the time limit as a very young child. When I finally saved the princess, I remember being in awe and relief. All those deaths and failures, only to finally beat it with a couple minutes to spare. Games with time limits are such a bitch.
2)Wolfenstein 3D (1992) for DOS. I remember that it was the first FPS and it was something to behold. There was nothing like it at the time. I liked the hints of horror and sci-fi elements. The gore was crazy for the times! One of the first games I ever attempted to speedrun. I remember it was great killing Nazi scum. It sounds silly but the game actually sparked an interest in WWII history and the occult for me.
3) One Must Fall 2097 (1994) for DOS. This was the first RPG infused fighting game I ever played. So many options(for the time). Great story, dialogue and 90's electronica soundtrack. Pick your pilot, customize your robot and join various tournaments to win prize money and respect from other pilots. I actually still play this once in awhile.
4) Monster Bash (1993) for DOS. This was a horror platformer that I loved very much. It was cutesy in some aspects but being a horror fan as a kid I loved the violence and macabre humor. Lots of gorey and spooky fun to be had. I still play this when Halloween comes around, it's perfect for the holiday.
Post some of your childhood favorites and tell us all about what made them memorable for you!
