I can think of probably a toxic fandom that isn't brought about in online circles, and should be discussed. No, I'm not talking about PokeMon, or even Sonic The Hedgehog either--Pokemon has bad apples; and Sonic has been getting better with the release of newer games, and some pretty dope movies. Capcom's fanbase can be volatile; compared to SNK's fanbase, I feel like at times Capcom with how big they have gotten (how they haven't gotten bankrupt like what happened with SNK in the 2000's) it caused SOME fans to become egotistical. Anecdotally, Howard Lincoln--the former president of Nintendo said that NeoGeo owners had what he once deemed "Neo egos". The worst I can say about SNK's fandom is that some members can be elitist. Can't help but feel like I had been that way during the times I had my AES since High School. My girlfriend has been helping me develop this alien concept of "humanity" (I'm a lizardman, what did you expect?).
One Capcom fan (also a Sonic Fan) who came to my mind almost immediately was Spax3. He stirred up some of the biggest controversy on YouTube; just as bad as the Irate Gamer; but Irate Gamer wasn't a big-a-Capcom fan as Spax.
Anecdotally, Spax3 ended up purchasing a NeoGeo (proof in this video: youtu.be/Wy-sNg68t10?si=lYEpNSbYNMYVOrAB&t=378) during the time when he HAD a website in 2008: The Game Toon Zone.
Oh, and did I mention he has a DeviantArt? www.deviantart.com/hoodz-da/art/Rarest-Neo-Geo-Game-I-own-587372366.
So, tuxedomarty , not only is the MegaMan X fanbase; or rather MegaMan (oh yes, MegaMan's fans can be like Sonic's--highly insatiable) fanbase noteworthy for toxicity, dare I say--it's Capcom since they originated MegaMan.
Can't help but to point to Spax3 as a posterboy for Capcom fanboyism? You decide.
And to wrap up this little piece, there was a tread about him on the NeoGeo Forums as "Spax3 Is Now One of Us"; anecdotally, one forumite said that he had a "shitty DeviantArt gallery".
The modern day Capcom fanbase, the ones who think Capcom have nothing going for them other than Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and/or (insert random crossover crap) and don't care about any of their older classics from their heyday during the 80's and 90's and even defend the company's neglect of Megaman in recent years are the worst. So it really depends on which side of the Capcom fandom it is since it has become divided into two factions: Their veteran fans who have been there since the 80's and the 90's, and the fans of their newer stuff who don't care about Megaman or any of the games that the veteran fans care about. And on the occasion that I do mention the older games from the 80's and 90's, it tends to be shrugged off by those people who only care about their newer titles (most of which are garbage save for Megaman 11 and Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection) who say that their newer stuff is better than every single one of the games I listed. I'm like "Dude, you can't be serious.". As for Spax3, I am familiar with him, but I don't remember any instances of him being toxic.
