Here are some things I found out about Money Puzzle Exchanger than I didn't know until recently, so hopefully they will be useful to other people too
Soloplay mode :
- If you pull lines down (by moving the joystick down twice) the game gets harder faster. You can see this if you watch how fast the "Level" goes up compared to the timer. This may apply to the Versus modes too.
- You can choose your background music in this mode by selecting your character carefully - there seem to be 6 different pieces of music in total (some characters share music, Mightdealer and Debtmiser have their own specific piece)
-If you press "START + A" during the "HOW TO PLAY" Tutorial - you can play as Face character "Hani" from the PC Engine Games "Hani on the Road" and "Hani in the sky". You *may" need to do this in Japanese mode though. Hani has an interesting look...
I have an old version of MAME and trying this "cheat" in US mode on there - it works but there is no Hani (see screenshot below). Good if you just want to play an uncluttered game though. Even with Hani there is no large animated background image of the character to distract you.
Versus Modes :
- if you group 6 or more coins of the same type together you will send a line of coins to your opponent's side (it's not just chains!) but this is hard to do with rarer currency like 50s and 500s
- when lines are sent from your opponent to your side (+ vice versa), the pattern of the coins differs depending on which character sends them to you. If you look at the character selection screen from Soloplay mode : the top row of 4 characters send much easier patterns than the last 4 characters
You can read more details and see the specifics of the patterns that each character sends here (scroll down to the bottom)
General :
- as well as the large background image changing, the actual (moveable) characters squash vertically when the coins are very low (they are getting worried the coins are so close!)
