Having just done this with the NGPC I wanted to ask :
I have only done this 3 times now
ZX Spectrum - I had always wanted one because my friends had all them but I never really thought I could buy one myself (I was a just a kid - in the old days when kids didn't have money or expensive phones). But then on a trip into town I bought 3 Spectrum games. All Codemasters budget titles that I knew nothing about - Dizzy, BMX Simulator and 3D Star Fighter (£1.99 each). Dizzy turned out to be a pretty good game for a budget title, the others were ok. I then bought a Spectrum+ which I found cheap in a magazine about 4 weeks later.
Commodore Amiga 500 - I knew my brother was saving up for one with the proceeds from his Saturday job. About a month before I bought Three Stooges (£4.99) and Hostages (£7.99) mainly because I found them cheap. I knew nothing about the games other than the concept but neither game was bad. Many years later I bought the Amiga and all the games from him for a bargain £50
and now NGPC - I bought 3 games (Actually 4 thanks to Powerwave being very generous and sending me a free game), but I don't own the machine yet.
I think I did it all these times because it's exciting to get some games for a system I knew (or hoped) I would own soon. Kind of adds to the build up. Also it was a way of making a future commitment to get the system without spending the full amount of cash at that stage. One of my friends bought Pen Pen Tricelon for the Dreamcast and then got his Dreamcast 6 months later. That was a very strange choice of first game for the system!
What consoles/computers have you bought games for *BEFORE* you owned the system? And which games did you choose and what did you think of them when you finally played them?
