Who else is a fan of the Golden Axe series and which games in the series do you particularly enjoy?
Hardcore Gaming 101 Golden Axe series article
I've been a fan of the series for many years. The first one I played was the Master System version. The animation was choppy and there was only one character but I put many hours into it and loved it. Later I had the excellent Mega Drive version which was fairly close to the arcade original.
I also really enjoyed the two Mega Drive sequels. Golden Axe II has some memorable music especially 'Ravaged Village' and 'Tower'. I always found the final boss very tough to beat.
The third game is quite underrated I think. Not many 16-bit side scrollers give you a choice of different routes. As well as having the ability to block and double jump, there are a surprising number of moves in the game including special moves and team moves. Perhaps the magic attacks aren't quite as impressive as in previous games though.
Golden Axe III FAQ
The Revenge of Death Adder was an awesome sequel to the original game and it was very disappointing to many that it has never seen a home release. A strange decision on the part of Sega. I've played the game often in multiplayer and it really is a lot of fun especially when doing the team attacks including four player piledrivers. The different routes add to the replay. I avoid the US version which makes you take every route. The game could have done with more varied bosses though.
As great as the other games are, the arcade original will always be my favourite.
